Inspiration: Romance and Regencycore

Dearest Gentle Reader,

While the new season of Bridgerton on Netflix sweeps the nation up in a romantic frenzy, we at Tyrrells can provide the ability to introduce a touch of Regency style to your home. The Regencycore trend has been rising in popularity due to the rise in streaming services pushing period pieces from Sanditon to Pride and Prejudice, Bridgerton to Wuthering Heights.

"Regencycore" is classified as an aesthetic inspired by the fashion and/or décor of early 19th century in Europe.

Despite the fractious historical relations between Britain and France at the time, French style, in both fashion and interior design made their way across the English Channel and firmly implanted itself in the everyday lives of the wealthy upper classes. This can be observed through both the dress of the time period and also within the furniture and soft furnishings present in Regency home. From floors to walls, bedrooms to sitting rooms, homes were opulent and featured bold designs that are still imbedded in modern day décor trends.

Axminster style weave originated in the 1700s and King George and Queen Elizabeth themselves Axminster carpets into their royal homes. While we don't supply from Axminster Carpets themselves, we do have a wide range of Axminster weave carpets to add a royal feel to your living spaces.

Ulster and Brintons carpets boast a selection of Axminster weaves in a myriad of patterns and styles that would have looked perfectly at home during the Regency period, motif designs and florals would have dominated the floors of the time period, with wool predominantly featured prior to the invention of the polypropylene/wool mix. Blissfully, in modern day, all of our Axminster weaves feature an 80/20 mix, adding softness to an otherwise roughly textured carpet.

Parquet flooring began it's rise in popularity in the 1600s, making it's way to the UK as French style began weaving it's way into upper class society. Originally manufactured exclusively from wood, modern parquet designs are available in lower maintenance materials, such as luxury vinyl tiles (both in glue down and click format). We're proud to say that we are one of few flooring companies that currently have a Karndean Inspire showroom. With state of the art design software and the perfect 'at a glance' view of all Karndean ranges, there are many different parquet designs, from a standard herringbone, to a unique basketweave.

Swapping minimalism for maximalism, Regencycore utilises pattern and rich colours to add a truly opulent and luxurious feel to the home. Luxury fabrics like chenille and velvets add to the expensive feel, and add a touch of drama and sophistication to your space.

For your bedroom, ornate design elements, and scroll style arms and legs are a stunning addition, tying in with French design, and adding an air of opulence to the space. Light oaks and distressed finishes add a contemporary element so as not to overwhelm the space with traditional deep oaks and mahoganies. The Limoges, Camille, Chic, and Mabel ranges all offer traditional silhouettes, while still maintaining a contemporary feel that really encapsulates any historical inaccuracies that are often overlooked in popular period media.

The Chic bedroom collection is another stunning addition, with it's distressed finish and fresh light oak finish.

However, we have a selection of ranges which feature more updated finishes to help introduce the Regency style to contemporary spaces, such as the Mustique collection of occasional pieces. Constructed from mindi wood with a limed finish, the range features traditional ornate design and parquet fronts and tops to bring the the 19th and 21st centuries together seamlessly within your living space.

If you're almost all the way convinced on Regencycore, but you're not ready to fully commit to a total overhaul, we also have rugs available from Mastercraft and Asiatic rugs which feature Persian style designs that graced the homes of the upper classes in Regency society. With a selection of more muted colourways and bright bold motifs and prints, there's something to help ease this bold and eye catching design concept into your home.
